LBC Reflections: Navigating Faith Together

Be Rich 2025: Living from Scarcity or Abundance

As we close our Be Rich season this year, I want to leave you with one question:
Have you grown in how you are rich toward others?
Some of us have taken real steps over the past few weeks — we gave, we volunteered, we stretched ourselves in generosity. Others of us have had a perspective shift — realising life isn’t meant to revolve only around me, but not quite knowing what to do yet. And maybe for some, not much has changed. If that’s you, today could be the start of something new.

The tension is this: we all wrestle with generosity. We’re afraid that if we give, we’ll fall behind. We won’t have enough. That’s called a scarcity mindset. But Scripture offers another way — an abundance mindset. God is generous, and when we give, we don’t lose. We step into His generosity.

That’s what the story of Ruth shows us. Naomi loses her husband and sons. Ruth, her Moabite daughter-in-law, chooses to stay with her, embracing a life of poverty and outsider status. To survive, Ruth goes to glean in the fields. That’s where Boaz enters the story. He notices her and doesn’t just obey the law by leaving scraps — he goes further. He provides protection, extra grain, and eventually takes on the costly role of kinsman-redeemer. His generosity doesn’t just change Ruth and Naomi’s lives. It changes his. And his choice becomes part of God’s bigger plan, leading all the way to Jesus.

So, what can we learn?
  1. God’s love always makes room for the outsider.
  2. Generosity happens in small, faithful choices.
  3. Redemption costs something — Boaz gave up wealth and reputation; Jesus gave His life.

And here’s where it meets us. To be rich toward others is simple: Give. Serve. Love.
  • Give. Hold what you have with open hands. Generosity isn’t only about big gifts — it’s often the small things that change someone’s world.
  • Serve. Use your time and energy to lift others. Whether stacking chairs, mentoring a student, or helping at Carols, service is love in action.
  • Love. Like Boaz, love that goes beyond obligation. It’s the kind of love that reflects Jesus, who gave Himself for us.

So the invitation is clear: Will you live out of scarcity — always afraid you don’t have enough? Or will you live from abundance — trusting God and stepping into generosity?

You may not change the whole world, but you can change someone’s world. And in the process, God will change yours.
