We love fairness. It’s built into our Aussie DNA — the sense that if you’re one of the good ones, do your best, and don’t hurt anyone, you’ll be fine. So when it comes to heaven, most people assume that good people go there. But Jesus said something startling — and liberating. Jesus redefined “good.”
Not as “better than most.” Not as “doing more good than harm.” He said the standard is perfect love — love for God and love for people. That’s not just keeping the rules; that’s never failing to love. By that measure, we’ve all missed the mark. Even the best of us have gossiped, judged, withheld kindness, or walked past someone in need. Jesus wasn’t raising the bar to make us fail — He was showing how far love goes. And then — He did something unthinkable. He took our place. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become acceptable to God.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21 He didn’t just cover our mistakes; He swapped records with us. The perfect One took our wrongs and gave us His right standing with God. That’s not fair — that’s grace. Heaven isn’t a reward for the good enough. It’s a gift for the forgiven. So maybe the question isn’t “Am I good enough?” Maybe it’s “Have I trusted the One who already is?”
