We all have those moments in our life where we are given the choice of what is easy and comfortable vs what is hard and will stretch us. Our jobs, our families, our friendships, and our commitments to ourselves, all have forks in the paths that we need to navigate. What I want to propose to you, reader, is that your ability to make the right choice will not come down to your ability or situation but rather your sense of purpose and calling. In fact, most of the choices that we make regarding things within our control are insights into how we see ourselves. What we eat. Who we spend time with. Where our money goes. How we entertain ourselves. Who we reach out to. And more, are all insights into how we view ourselves. When we are healthy, our choices reflect a person who possesses a strong call to make this world a better place. A purpose that overcomes the difficulties that day to day living affords every human on this planet. When we are weak, our decisions reveal a person who is hurting, lost, or purposeless. Now the good news is that if you are feeling like you are lacking purpose then check out what Jesus says: ”Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” The yoke is a wooden bar that would steer two oxen, so they worked together. One direction, a singular purpose. Jesus wants you to learn from him and take his way of living and adopt it as your own. If you would like a great resource to start exploring this area, then check out https://www.practicingtheway.org/ and consider joining the course when it comes out in April. And if you are someone who feels full of purpose and want to maintain that momentum then check out another thing that Jesus says: “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” If you remain in Jesus than that purpose and call you experience remains grounded in the one who makes sense of this life we get to live. God loves you, go and make the wise choice full of purpose as a follower of Jesus. AuthorJosh has been on staff at Lesmurdie Baptist Church since 2018.
